Licensed family child care homes FY2008
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) uses the term "Day Care Home." Day care homes are "family homes in which care is provided for more than three children, including the caregiver's own children, related and unrelated children." These homes must be licensed by DCFS.
Source of definition: Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).
Summary of Licensing Standards for Day Care Homes

Note: For additional information on DCFS's definition of day care homes, see DCFS / Day Care and Early Childhood; and Section 2.18, Definition of Day Care Home, in DCFS's Child Care Act Study Guide.
Note: Licensed family child care homes serve up to a total of 12 children who are up to 12 years of age. Several categories of children's age groupings are permitted. These are explained in the Summary of Licensing Standards for Day Care Homes. (See Link above.)
Licensed family child care homes FY2008, Number of sites
The minimum known number of family child care homes licensed by DCFS in a geographic area (for example, state or county)
Source of data: Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (INCCRRA)
Date of data: June 2008 (FY 2008)
Geographic region: These data are available by state, county, township, IL house district, IL Senate district, ISBE region, IDHS region, municipality, ZIP code.
Note: The number reported here is the "minimum known" because not all centers report to INCCRRA.
Note: Centers that served no children were not counted in the number of sites.
Note: Centers that served “summer only” were not counted in the number of sites.
Licensed family child care homes FY2008, Total capacity across sessions 0 and 1 year
This number is the minimum known capacity for each individual session serving children 0 and 1 year of age.
Source of data: Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (INCCRRA)
Date of data: June 2008 (FY 2008)
Geographic region: These data are available by state, county, township, IL house district, IL Senate district, ISBE region, IDHS region, municipality, ZIP code.
Note: The number reported here is the "minimum known" because not all centers that report to INCCRRA report their capacity by age groups.
- Among “Day” sessions, approximately 99% of sessions accept children “full-time” or “both full-time and part-time.”
- Among “Session 1” sessions, approximately 76% of sessions accept children “part-time”; and approximately 90% of sessions accept children “part-time” or “both part-time and full-time.”
- Among “Session 2” sessions, approximately 93% of sessions accept children “part-time”; and approximately 97% of sessions accept children “part-time” or “both part-time and full-time.”
Note: The age groups included in this total capacity are: (1) Infant, 6 weeks - 14 months; and (2) Toddler, 15 weeks - 23 months. Licensed child care centers do not serve children younger than 6 weeks of age.
Note: The "total capacity across sessions" operated by a family child care home may be greater than the "total capacity" at any one time for the family child care home. For example, a family child care home that has a "total capacity" of 5 children at any one time may serve 5 children in one all-day session (for a total of 5 children served). There are a small number of homes that serve children in half-day sessions. These may serve 5 children in each of two half-day sessions (for a total of 10 children served).
The "total capacity across sessions" for children 0 and 1, children 2, and children 3 and 4 operated by a family child care home may also be less than the "total capacity" at any one time for the family child care home, as reported in IECAM. For example, a family child care home that has a "total capacity" of 6 children at any one time may serve only 4 children age 0-5, the other 2 children being school-age.
Note: Total capacity is not the same as enrollment. The number of children enrolled may be more or less than the total capacity.
Note: INCCRRA notes that, due to data reporting processes, some sessions may not be included in the data. Therefore the total licensed capacity reported here may not be identical to the true total licensed capacity. INCCRRA collects these data for purposes of parental referral, rather than for the specific purposes of the design of IECAM.
