Licensed child care centers FY2008

Centers licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). DCFS uses the term "day care center." DCFS provides the following definition:

"Day care center" means any child care facility which regularly provides day care for less than 24 hours per day for more than 8 children in a family home or more than 3 children in a facility other than a family home, including senior citizen buildings.

DCFS describes several types of centers that are not included in its definition of day care center. A list of these types is provided in Section 377.2 of document Part 377. FACILITIES AND PROGRAMS EXEMPT FROM LICENSING. (See link below.)

Licensed child care centers FY2008, Total capacity across sessions 0 and 1 year

Source of data: Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (INCCRRA)

Date of data: June 2008 (FY2008)

Geographic region: These data are available by state, county, township, IL house district, IL Senate district, ISBE region, IDHS region, municipality, ZIP code.

Note: The “individual sessions” included in this count are: (1) Day; (2) Session 1; and (3) Session 2.

Note: The age groups included in this total capacity are: (1) Infant, 6 weeks - 14 months; and (2) Toddler, 15 weeks - 23 months. Licensed child care centers do not serve children younger than 6 weeks of age.

Note: The total capacity across all the shifts (or sessions) operated by a child care center may be greater than the total licensed capacity at any one time for the child care center. For example, a child care center that is licensed to serve 20 children at any one time may serve 20 children in one all-day session (for a total of 20 children). Alternately, the child care center may serve 20 children in each of two half-day sessions (for a total of 40 children).

Note: INCCRRA notes that, due to data reporting processes, some sessions may not be included in the data. Therefore the total licensed capacity reported here may not be identical to the true total licensed capacity. INCCRRA collects these data for purposes of parental referral, rather than for the specific purposes of the design of IECAM.
